Pyrenote Desk (San Diego Zoo)

Full-Stack Software Development

Bioacoustics ML inference and data labeling platform for the San Diego Zoo. Scales to terabytes of data.

I really liked working on this because it exposed me to web technologies and web app development. I was initially “hired” just to be the SQL and Pandas guy, but as I became more involved in the project I had to self-teach React and full-stack software development.
Data Science and Statistics is cool and valuable, but I think it is still quite limited in the sense that after you do all your dashboards, hypothesis tests, and storytelling visualizations, someone else still has to do the thing your data suggests. In other words, you need to “deploy” it via software.
My work here would go on to inspire my work in Feeding San Diego, where I proposed building a production-ready route optimization web app instead of the standard data analysis jupyter notebook. And that turned out to be the right call because the web app became much more useful to the team than any jupyter notebook could’ve been.
